An Analysis of the Novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

  1. Introduction

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry tells the story of a retired old man who embarks on a long journey alone to visit his sick friends.

The book did not attract me at the beginning, apathetic and uncommunicative families, a somewhat cowardly old man Harold and his somewhat neurotic wife Maureen. If it hadn#39;t been for a letter from old friend Queenie, who knew that she would not be alive soon, his life would probably not have changed until he died. He travels across England from the southwest to the Northeast because of the story of a girl and his complex feelings for his friends. He began a 627-mile journey from the south to the north, from the southwest to the northeast, across England, and lasted 87 days. Some people are very sad and don#39;t understand why Harold has to walk to deliver letters on his own. I think his ideas are very similar to those of Forrest Gump. He just wants to go and finish one of his dreams.

The protagonist Harold#39;s starting point is to give hope to his friends, but eventually he realizes self-redemption, and stimulates the re-affirmation of self-worth, the new recognition of growth defects and the acceptance and understanding of the real fate. Meanwhile, in the process of waiting and paying attention to Harold, his wife examined the painful past one by one, triggering a new understanding of love and a new understanding of self.

Rachel Joyce was born in London in 1962.She is a British best-selling author and senior BBC playwright. In 2007, she won the Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Drama. In 2012, the novel The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was published, which was awarded the Booker Prize for Literature and the Commonwealth Book Award. Joyce also won the British Book Award for Writers of the Year, and was shortlisted for Writers of the Year in 2014. Joyce subsequently published 'The Day When Time Stops(2013)' and 'An unlikely Pilgrimage ' series 'The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: Queenie#39; s Love Song(2014)' and 'Miracle Records'. (2017)According to the author in the interview, her father#39;s illness is part of the book#39;s inspiration. Many of the characters in this book have been met by the author himself, many of them are just one-sided. The author uses what he knows to start creating choreography. Many of the descriptions in the book are based on the author#39;s and the author#39;s husband#39;s personal experiences, which are then adapted by the author.

  1. Demonstration

The pilgrimage road is the road of reflection, listening carefully to the voice from the heart. When a person really walks with his legs, the endless land is not the only thing to see. On the way, there are unpredictable beautiful and mysterious natural scenery and abundant new life, which make Harold dazzled, feel free and excited(王娜 81). After rain and sunshine, the light on the ground is golden, the air smells green and full of new life. Harold was so tired that he could hardly lift his legs, but he was dazzled by such abundant hope. He knew that if he could always focus on something greater than himself, he would be able to reach it. Hard journeys, occasional pedestrians and deep reflection have made a qualitative change in Harold#39;s mental journey.
