摘 要
《月亮与六便士》是威廉·萨默塞特·毛姆1919年写的一部小说。这部小说是根据法国印象派画家保罗·高更的生活经历写成的。它讲述了一个男人痴迷于艺术,以至于抛弃了妻子和孩子的故事,后来他去了南太平洋的塔希提岛追求艺术。在南太平洋,他画了很多引人入胜又充满艺术价值的画。贫穷和疾病折磨着他,但他不在乎。这部充满黑色幽默的小说揭示了人性,向我们展示了天才、人格与物质文明以及现代婚姻与家庭生活之间的矛盾。因此,本文旨在分析小说主人公的人格特征和心理结构,揭示主人公的人格与物质文明之间的矛盾。

An Analysis of the Novel The moon and sixpence
1.Introduction
William Somerset Maugham was a famous English novelist and playwright. He wrote a lot of novels included Circle, Shackles of life, The moon and sixpence, Tremor of leaves, Ah kin and many other famous novels. Maugham was born in Paris on January 25, 1874. After graduated from middle school, he studied in Heidelberg University. After that, he chose to study medicine in London.Through his efforts, he obtained the qualification of surgeon in 1892. In 1897, he published his first novel, Lisa of Lambeth. This novel tells us the life of a slum girl Lisa .She is beautiful and talented. A boy named Tom loves her secretly all the time but Lisa does not like him.She falls in love with a man who is married with another lady. Through many troubles, Lisa died at home finally. This novel is related with childhood of William Somerset Maugham. His father is a lawyer and works for British Embassy in France. His parents died when he was less than 10 years old so he was raised by his uncle. He was always mistreated by elder students because of his short, plump figure and his stuttering. This lead to his isolated and introverted character. At the age of 41, he published his second novel, Human bondage. Through the life experience of Philip before the age of 30, the novel describes the story of an ignorant teenager who becomes a mature man after going through all the ups and downs, and finally gets his mind liberated. In 1920, he came to China and wrote the novel The screen of China, it reveals the Chinese society, the industrious simplicity of the common people and the hypocrisy of foreign powers. After that, he wrote another novel called Color Towel which was based on Chinese society. In 1919, The moon and sixpence was published. It describes us the life of a man who is crazy about art. Maugham settled on the Mediterranean coast of France in 1928. During the second world war, he went to the United Kingdom and the United States to publicize the joint resistance to Germany, and wrote The blade and Eat and Drink. In 1948, he wrote Catalina based on 16th century Spain. William Somerset Maugham has been a member of the royal society of letters since 1954 when the queen made him an honorary squire. Finally he died in France on December 16, 1965.
The Moon and Sixpence is written in 1919. The novel is based on the life experience of a French impressionist painter Paul Gauguin. It tells us a story about a man who was so crazy about art that he abandoned his wife and child and went to the South Pacific Tahiti to pursue art. In South Pacific, he painted lots of fetching pictures which were full of values. Poverty and illness tormented him, but he did not care. The novel, full of black humor, reveals humanity and shows us the contradiction between genius, personality and material civilization as well as modern marriage and family life. Therefore, this paper is aimed to analyze the personality characteristics and psychological structure of the main character in the novel and to reveal the contradiction between the character#39;s personality and material civilization.
