摘 要

移动技术的不断发展,既丰富了人们的日常生活,也极大地改变了学生的学习方式。现今,移动学习已成为大学生繁忙学习生活中利用零散时间有效高效学习的方式之一。而其中,移动辅助语言学习更是随着智能移动设备的基本普及在大学生中得以广泛应用。智能移动设备是移动技术的代表之一,其各项智能软件为大学生二语习得提供了具体便捷的途径。

本文从学生运用智能手机学习语言的角度,在南京林业大学展开问卷调查,归纳分析大学生移动语言学习的现状,探讨智能移动设备与大学生第二语言(英语)学习策略之间的关系。通过对调查问卷数据的具体分析,探究移动辅助语言学习的现状。主要研究内容包括:大学生使用智能手机的基本情况,其对移动辅助语言学习的需求以及现有的移动语言学习资源等。

通过定量和定性分析,本文得出的基本结论是:智能手机等移动学习设备已在大学生中广泛普及,部分学生已经能够有意识的运用智能移动设备辅助其在英语词汇,听力等方面的语言学习。大多数学生对移动辅助语言学习持支持态度。尽管如此,大学生们在移动学习上却花费极少。同时,本文总结了移动辅助语言学习的不足,提出了相关解决措施,以及今后的研究方向。

A Study of College Students’ English Learning

Based on Smart Mobile Devices

1. Introduction

1.1 Research background

It is well-known that English is one of the most international languages. With China’s entry into WTO and under the background of globalization, English learning has become the nationwide movement in China, especially in colleges. It is compulsory for nearly all students from the start of primary school to the second year of university. Good command of English both in oral and written has turned into one of significant advantages of young people. College students adopt different methods to enhance their language proficiency.

During the process of the modern city construction and reconstruction, the Internet penetration and the development of wireless technology have become the essential factors for measuring the city’s degree of internationalization and modernization. In China, communication networks cover most of the region. Moreover, the Internet penetration is 47.9% by 2014 announced by CNNIC and many cities have been covered free WLAN. The development of 3G and 4G leads to the renewal and replacement of network devices. College students have become the main force of netizens.

Smart mobile devices, including smart phones, laptops, tablet PCs, etc, are gradually becoming the necessary part in people’ life, especially in college students’ life. Almost every college student has at least one smart mobile device. In February, 2015, The 35th China Internet Development Statistics Report released by CNNIC points out that, of all the citizens, 649 million used broadband and 557 million used mobile phones to assess the Internet up to 2014. Mobile phones play the role of NO. 1 terminal to connect the Internet. Over time, those devices are considered essential for students’ daily life. They can be used to connect the Internet to send messages, e-mail, surf the Internet, etc. Nowadays, they can also be applied to study, especially when college students learn their Second Language (L2), like English.

1.2 Research significance and purpose

This paper is going to study the college students’ English learning based on smart mobile devices. The main purpose is to understand the situation of college students’ L2 (English) learning in the MALL environment and analyze the functions of smart mobile devices in English learning. Furthermore, some efficiency-related suggestions can be put forward to make a guidance for college students. It is important for making such further study about CALL and the results also can lay a solid foundation for future study.

1.3 Organization of the thesis

This thesis is divided into three chapters:

Chapter one is to provide a brief introduction to the research background, the significance, the purpose and the organization of the thesis.

Chapter two is the demonstration. Firstly, it serves as literature review, including some theories about second language learning, language learning strategies and reviews of domestic and foreign research and achievements of CALL and MALL; secondly, it is a MALL survey, specifically presenting the design of the survey, research questions, subjects and questionnaire distribution and collection; thirdly, it mainly focuses on data analysis and discussion in lights of the survey questionnaires. The survey data are listed by tables and charts and their analyses are all in details, which are divided into four parts.

In the last chapter, the thesis makes a conclusion of key points, which puts forward some suggestions for college students’ English learning on MALL.

L2 learning is primarily the study of how learners learn an additional language after they have acquired their first language (L1). For most Chinese students, they adopt learning strategies to learn English, their L2.
