---A Study on the Characterization of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind

  1. Introduction

Margaret Mitchell (1900 –1949) was an American author and journalist. She was born in Atlanta, where she lived her entire life. She is the daughter of Eugene Mitchell, an attorney and president of Atlanta Historical Society. She attended Smith College for one year, but the death of her mother required her to return home to manage the household of her father and her older brother. In 1922-1926, she was a local newspaper reporter for Atlanta journal. Margaret Mitchell only published one novel named Gone with the Wind during her lifetime.

Margaret Mitchell began to write the Gone with the Wind in 1926. Ten years later, the novel appeared. Gone with the Wind vividly shaped a strong will, to pursue independent woman -- Scarlett by describing the rise and fall of history of two south estates and the love between a few characters. Scarlett’s feminine and masculine characters are special highlights of the novel. The book broke all publication records:50000 copies sold in one day, a million sold in six months, two million in a year. The entire nation seemed entranced with the gigantic novel. This novel won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.

The novel has many tempestuous conflicts. They play an important role in the art in order to portray the character. Among the many works of distinctive character shape, the most successful shape is contradiction, complex, multi-faceted character of Scarlett. Scarlett’s character provides a little spiritual food of out of the predicament for people. This thesis will aim at analyzing the change of Scarlett’s personality
