An Ecofeminist Analysis of Women Characters in Rebecca
- Introduction
Daphne Du Maurier (May 13, 1907-April 19, 1990) was an English novelist and playwright, often classified as a romanticist writer. She was deeply influenced by the Gothic Novel in the Nineteenth Century whose main features were mysterious and horrible. At the same time, she also studied and imitated the Bronte sisters’ novel writing techniques. Besides, she was a member of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded the Lady's Medal of the British Empire in 1969. She disliked urban life and lived in Cornwall which was on the Atlantic coast of southwestern England for a long time. Many of her works were set in accordance with Cornwall’s customs, and thus also called “Cornish novels”.
The novel Rebecca (1938) was one of Daphne Du Maurier’s most successful and best-selling works. In 1939, she won the National Book Award for Favourite Novel in America. And in 2000, Rebecca was acclaimed as “The 20th Century Best Novel” of Anthony Awards, which was the highest honor of mystery novels. She also wrote many excellent works, such as Jamaica Inn (1936), Frenchman's Creek (1941), The King's General (1946) and My Cousin Rachel (1951), etc.
