A Brief Analysis of Escapism in Never Let Me Go
- Introduction
Kazuo Ishiguro (born on 8th November 1954) is a Nobel-Prize-winning British novelist, screenwriter, and short story writer. Ishiguro is considered one of the most celebrated contemporary fiction authors in the English-speaking world, having received four Man Booker Prize nominations and winning the 1989 award for his novel The Remains of the Day. His seventh novel, The Buried Giant, was published in 2015. In 2017, the Swedish Academy awarded Ishiguro the Nobel Prize in Literature, describing him in its citation as a writer "who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world".
Never Let Me Go, as one of such representative short fictions, was published in 2005 and adapted into a movie in 2010, taking us along the transient life journey of the clone people by focusing on three main characters, namely, Tommy, Kathy and Ruth, with some interwoven sub-plots about love and friendship, reminiscence of the past as well as the fragility of human lives. Upon its publication, it has garnered much attention among the literary community. Previous critiques and reviews of Never Let Me Go from home and abroad have been focusing on the genre of this work, art of narration, analysis of the protagonists' temperament, the ethnical morality as well as the universal themes buried in the disinterested narration.
