An Analysis of the Formation of Totalitarianism in 1984
Introduction
George Orwell (1903-1950), original called Eric Blair, was one of the most famous political allegory novelists in the 20th century. His two political novels, Animal Farm and 1984, not only earned him a great reputation in English-speaking countries, but were also praised by literary critics as the most inspirational and predictive literary works during the Soviet-American war. 1984 is listed as the three representative works of dystopian literature together with Brave New World and We. His political allegory 1984 portrays a vivid picture of a totalitarian society. The novel uses a metaphorical approach to present the nightmare-like totalitarian society before us and to visualize the kind of fears that accompany it. Orwell was described as "a grim conscience of a generation" and "the greatest moral force in English literature in the past decade" (Huang Liqing 135) because of his sharp criticism of totalitarian society's attack on human nature. 1984 has been widely translated into dozens of languages by countries all over the world and sold tens of millions of copies. The concepts such as "big brother", "new word", "British Society" and "thoughtcrime" have all been incorporated into English dictionaries and their works in literary education are enhanced. For example, they are introduced into literature class, or put into related lectures. Even now, people still put forward various new views on 1984 and fill in the gaps in all aspects.
1984 was written in 1948. On the one hand, when the World War II ended, the
suffering and sacrifice brought by the war at that time made human beings begin to reflect on the authoritarian dictatorship of Hitler. The totalitarian and repeated brainwashing mentioned in this book are exactly a true portrayal of Hitler Thought Autocracy. On the other hand, when the tensions between the East and the West were tense at the time, the Cold War was imminent. Orwell not only joined the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, but also experienced the cruel excluding and killing in the Soviet Union. Therefore, the motto of this novel was once considered as a criticism of the authoritarian rule of Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Communist Party. The novel
tells readers what totalitarianism is by describing the life of the protagonist Winston Smith, reflecting the suffocating and nervous social pressures and totalitarianism in which everyone is dying to make money. The essence of totalitarianism is the control of human thought.
