An Analysis of the Duality of Character in “Steppenwolf”

  1. Introduction

“Steppenwolf” is the 1946 Nobel Prize winner Herman Hesse’s (1877-1962) important masterpiece published in 1927. It was later translated into 36 kinds of languages which spread in various countries of the world. The novel has been hailed as a holy novel by the Japanese and American youth, and is particularly respected by the American hippie generation. It has attracted much attention among Western colleges and ordinary readers and is considered an undisputed classic. In fact, this novel has attracted widespread attention throughout the world and the following is the research status of the novel both at home and abroad.

Among the foreign researches, in 1984, the History of German Modern Literature translated from the Soviet Union identified the “Steppenwolf” as a chapter in the “ Face of the Fascist dictatorship and anti-fascist literature ”module. It saw this novel as an anti-war literature and a strong criticism of social reality. Thomas Mann called it “ Germany's Ulysses”. The American scholar Teordo Turkowski, in his book “ The Herman Hesse 's Fiction: A Study of the Theme and Structure,” addressed the narrative structure of the “Steppenwolf”. From here, the protagonist's split state has been fully displayed, allowing the readers to feel that the protagonist's exploration of the ideal spiritual realm is a difficult and painful mental path. In the article “Autistic Awakening: On the Theme of a Steppenwolf” (“Foreign Literature Review”, No. 4, 1988), the author explored the difficult individual pursuit of “Steppenwolf” from the theme of loneliness.
