—An Ecocritical Reading of The Yearling

  1. Introduction

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings(1896–1953), one of the famous American woman writers, was born in Washington, DC. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ childhood experience is closely related to nature. The local literature she created in the outlying forests of Florida was based on real life stories. Most of them write ordinary people, like fishermen, hunters, and farmers. The scenery is charmingly depicted. She is not only an American novelist, a reporter, but also a poet.
Rawlings moved to Florida in 1928 and devoted herself to writing novels. Her short story, A Young Girl, won the 1937 O. Henry Award. The Yearling, published in 1938, made her famous, and won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1989. In all her works, The Yearling is one of Rawlings’ most famous and representative novels. It has fascinating plots and profound meanings, demonstrating the author’s great artistic talent.
This novel is full of rich local flavor and warm burial of humanistic feelings. Rawlings portrays the lives of ordinary people in the wilderness areas of Florida after the American Civil War in a subtle way. The novel focuses on the 11-year-old boy Jordy and his father Beni living in a remote village in Florida. The father and son have a good relationship. They worked together and hunted together. The son always wanted a pet to accompany him. One day on their way to the town, his father was bitten by a snake. In order to disinfect, his father killed a deer and used deer gallbladder to stop bleeding. The careful boy discovered the young deer hiding in the jungle. After his begging, his dad agreed to take the deer home.

Nevertheless, as the deer grew older, it repeatedly destroyed the livelihood of the crops affecting the whole family. Beni wanted to let go of the deer. Jordy was angry with his father and left home. After experiencing a series of events, the son finally realized his father’s pains under the hunger and cold.
