1.1 Current Situation of Homeschooling in western countries and China

In recent years, there have been some parents in China who have chosen to educate their children at home. In Beijing, Shanghai and some big cities have found homeschooling cases. Tutors connect with each other through social networks and instant massages, sharing information and experiences in home schools, and exerting influence through the Internet. Take the China Homeschooling Website as an example. The website was established in 2011 and quickly attracted more than 1,000 members, as well as the public and the media. In 2010, the National Family Education Conference was held in Dali, Yunnan. China’s students appeared for the first time in the homeschooling in the 1990s, and there have been more cases of homeschooling reported by the media since then. Homeschooling has become a phenomenon worthy of our attention.

Although the study of homeschooling has been going on for some time and the number of studies has increased in recent years, the research on homeschooling in China is still “meager” and has quite a few shortcomings. Another weakness of homeschooling research is that the content of the research is rather monotonous. It basically centers on education, which limits the view of homeschooling and further research. As for the number of homeschooling studies, it is still exceedingly limited in comparison to other countries. So far, no systematic research on homeschools has been found in monographs. All in all, there is still an army of work to be done in the study of homeschooling and there is still a long way to go.
