An Analysis of the Play Waiting for Godot

1.. Introduction

1.1 The foreign research status

The research and praise abroad of Beckett never stopped. In the book "The Theatre of the Absurd" by Esslin Martin in 1969[1], it was absurd to wait for Godot's performance. The significance, the subject of Waiting for Godot, etc. was analyzed comprehensively and uniquely, and as stated in the 1969 Becker’s Nobel Prize prize, “Becket’s two masterpieces may be the most obvious. "Waiting for Godot" and "Ah, the Good Day" can all be considered as biblical notes. For example, in "Waiting for Godot" there is such a sentence: "Are you going to come or another we have to wait for? What?” The two tramps in the play had to face, brutal and meaningless in a barbarous way. This can be said to be a more humanistic script. No law is more cruel than the creation itself. The only place in the creation is the fact that he maliciously puts other laws on it, but if we imagine there is a God, a God who creates human beings to endure, endless suffering. Well, we are just like the two tramps in the play, how will we meet in a certain place somewhere? Beckett's answer to this question is the name of the play. By the end of the play, we still haven't figured out Godot’s Identity, just as we did not understand the final scene of our own life, the curtain fell, we are convinced of the power of the grievances that we have seen in front of us, but we understand that no matter what kind of torture we experience, there is one thing that will never wear off. And that is hope. "Wait for Godot" simply describes the formal choices faced by humans in the face of eternal, unforeseeable waiting."

1.2 The Domestic Research Status

Domestically, there have been three wave of researches on Beckett's works. Just as Wang Pin mentioned in the "Waiting for Godot's Research and Acceptance in China," the acceptance and research of "Waiting for Godot" in China is divided into three stages first. The stage was mainly concentrated in the early 80s of the last century and the Cultural Revolution, which was mainly a critical political study. The second stage was the study of the "absurd heat" in the 1980s and 1990s. Research in the 1980s mainly focused on thematic ideas and artistic skills. Research in the 1990s focused on language and structure.” In the 1960s, China’s research on “Waiting for Godot” basically remained on the class stand. For example, in the “The Fall of Theatre Art” written by Mr. Dong Hengbiao of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1963, it was ridiculous, like a riddle, that he didn’t even know what he was writing and thought that “ Waiting for Godot’s propaganda is a life of death and hopelessness. In the second stage, the evaluation of the play is positive. In Chen Jia’s talk about the desolate The play script - Waiting for Godot said: On the one hand, it is a novel idea to wait for Gordon's absurdity. On the other hand, he believes that this is Beckett's dissatisfaction with the Western capitalist world in which he is present and chants more than usual. The drama of capitalist world life was a bit more brilliant. In the third stage of the 1990s, in Wang Yuhua's "Trying to Analyze Absurdism -- Waiting for Godot", the main feature of the absurdism was that of existentialism, Nietzsche philosophy, Berger. Sen's intuitionism is the ideological foundation, depicting “the absurdity of the essence of the Western world has controlled the reality of people’s lives” through bizarre and absurd tactics. He believes that the drama “Waiting for Godot” has opened a window for us to understand the Western spiritual world. Let us see the spiritual suffering of Westerners under high material civilization.
