The Interpretation of Existentialism in Perfume

  1. Introduction

Patrick Suskind is a contemporary German novelist. Born in southern Germany in 1949, he studied piano in his early years and then history in university. He used to do a secretarial job for Siemens, and then worked in a bar dance hall, and even worked as a table tennis partner. He once relied on writing a script to the TV station for a living. It wasn't until 1981 that his dramatic work The Double Bass made him stand out, but what really made him famous in the literary world was The Perfume: A Story of a Murderer published in 1985. The historical knowledge and rich experience of broadcasting gave Suskind an active mind and rich imagination. The theme of Suskind's works mostly focuses on people’s loneliness and existence. The author always focuses on the creative perspective of the psychologically deformed and silent young people at the bottom of the society. They often live alone, without the blessing from parents and brothers, without the support from friends, and with emotional loneliness. At the same time, they have to work against pressure from social groups.

Grenouille, the protagonist in Perfume, is a genius image with both dislocation and strangeness. He is born with a lack of human scent, but has an extraordinary sense of smell. Due to the lack of body odor, he was excluded from the world, but because of his special talent, he became a master of perfume creation. In Grenouille's scent-built kingdom, the lack of body odour led to his suspicion of self-existence. In order to gain people’s attraction and prove his own existence, he started a mad murder. In the end, he obtained the body fragrance of 25 girls by murder and made a magical perfume, which gained people's love and worship, but it also brought about his complete self-destruction. The goals of his crazy behavior is not only to achieve the value of survival, but also to get rid of the fear of survival. His pursuit of scent implies the pursuit of self-existence. From the story of Grenouille, we can fully feel the author's concern for the vulnerable individual.

This paper, divided into three parts, lays its stress on the interpretation of existentialism of the protagonist Grenouille respectively in terms of his awakening of self-existence, his doubt and pursuit of self-existence, and his verification and complete negation of self-existence. The whole process of Grenouille’s awareness of self-existence from birth to death vividly and effectively discloses the author’s concern for the underprivileged people living at the bottom of society and his considerations of their survival in harsh reality.
