Analysis of Holden Caulfield’s Inner Conflicts in The Catcher in the Rye

  1. Introduction

Jerome David Salinger is one of the famous modern writers in America. His only long novel The Catcher in the Rye is loved by the majority of teenagers and is also referred to as “modern classic” of American literature in the 20th century. He earned his reputation from the classic novel, however, after that he became withdrawn and lived a secluded life.

In the novel The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger creates a defiant and cynical youth, Holden, which shows us the conflict between his inner world and reality. Caulfield Holden’s cynical thought causes a negative resistance. He longs for sincerity, but what he meets is all hypocrisy and deception. He wants to escape from the world to a remote village to pretend to be a deaf and dump person and “the catcher in the rye” to protect children and let them not fall off a cliff. However, he has to compromises to the real society in the end because he is unable to change the situation.

The research of the novel mainly focuses on the narrative techniques, symbolism, theme and so on in the novel, and something others about ethical issues are also involved in discussion. Arthur Heisman and James E. Miller said that The Catcher in the Rye is a respected ancient narrative tradition, in the western novel it maybe have a profound meaning, which embodies the tradition of “pursue” (Heisman and Miller 129-137). Starting from the theme, David Stevenson believes that the novel is Holden’s comment on the world, humorous and bitter (Stevenson 215-217). Many comments on the analysis of Holden’s character in our country think that Holden has a complex character—he is weak, rebellious but has a desire of innocence and goodness. The reviewer Huang Qiuyin said that Holden is accustomed to taking evasive attitude rather than solving his difficulties in a positive way (Huang 34-36).
