摘 要
弗朗西丝·霍奇森·伯内特的《秘密花园》是一部经典儿童小说,讲述小姑娘玛丽的成长过程:从一个暴躁易怒的小东西变成友善活泼的小女孩,本文旨在分析成长主题在玛丽性格中的体现:由最初的疏离,发生转变到最终的顿悟, 由此总结影响儿童性格塑造的因素。

- Introduction
F. H. Burnett is a famous American children literature writer in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Her first best seller is That Lass O’Lowries, which drawn from her early life in mining district in England. However, it was her children literature works that made her a world-famous novelist and dramatist.
Her literature works enjoy a great reputation for her concerning for children and female problems. Her three representative works are A Little Princess, The Little Lord Fauntleroy, and The Secret Garden. Of which The Secret Garden is her most famous and successful novel. This novel has been published many times since it was published in 1911, with ten millions of sales amount and was adopted by primary textbooks of many countries. Last but not least, it was praised as one of the greatest competitive children Literature works in the world .
In recent years, abroad studies of F. H. Burnett are in the ascendant. Many critics study Burnett’s works from kinds of viewpoints, such as Jerry Phillips’ Post colonial interpretation(Phillips 135). Argiro L. Morgan’s Pragmatic analysis(Morgan 148), as well as Barbara Almond’s written comments from the point of pathology(Barbara 477).
