Comparison and Contrast between the Three Novels and Their Adapted Movies

  1. Introduction

It is an irrevocable tendency brought by rapid development of modern technology and media that more and more literary works are being adapted into movies. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Little Prince are three examples of them. All of them and their adapted movies have the same theme----attitude towards life and world. .

The first one is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and first was published in 1922, which tells a story that Benjamin Button who is born an old man begins aging backward. At the beginning of his life, he is a withered and worn baby but when he grows up with year in and year out he starts to embrace his life. He goes to take part in the war, runs a business, falls in love and has children. However, at last his mind begins to devolve, then he attends kindergarten and eventually relies on the care of the nurse. This novel was known by few people before it was directed into movie by David Fincher. The main plot is the same with the novel.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro was written by Ernest Hemingway and first published in 1936. It describes the mind activities of a dying man----Harry. He is infected with bacteria, waiting for the plane with his wife Helen to get him to hospital. During the wait, he looks back to the days when he takes part in the war and when he falls in love. At last, he died. Its adapted movie was directed by Henry King in 1952 but it has a totally different ending that Harry eventually survives.

The Little Prince, a well-known novel, has been translated into 250 kinds of language and dialects and has been voted the best book of 20th century in France. It tells a story that a little boy whose drawings are never appreciated by adults becomes a pilot when he grows up. And his plane crashes in SaharaDesert one day, then he meets a living creature that he calls it “Little Prince” in the vast expanse of the desert. During his stay with the little prince, the little prince tells his own life on the planet and his own experiences to other planets. It is firstly adapted into three-D animation by Mark Osborne in 2015.
