Original English Films’ influence on English Majors’ Language Learning

1. Introduction

In order to cater to the requirements of our society and our times, learning English has already become an inevitable trend. More and more people begin to study English for different purposes. They try a variety of learning methods such as joining in a club, reading English books, listening to English music and so on. However, those methods do not always work. Therefore, finding useful ways is of crucial importance, especially for English majors. In this Information Age, with the trend of globalization, original films as a multimedia learning resource has become well-received for English learning. Actually, this kind of approach has been widely used for some time. 21 Century is a visual culture era, providing a large number of language materials and information such as original English films for English majors. Original English films can meet the demands of students with stunning visual effects and idiomatic oral expression. In addition, the film is a mass culture carrier, concentration and sublimation of the real life, and the most intuitive and vivid expression of social cultures, lifestyles, customs and so on in a country or a nation. Besides, original films can stimulate students to actively think and express ideas relying on a rich storyline, a real scene and a fascinating theme. Furthermore, the films also create a more relaxing learning environment for English learners.

On the other hand, because of improper methods of watching original films, English majors’ attention and interest are easy to be diverted, which deserves reflection. This thesis aims to investigate English majors’ learning assisted by original films, to find out the existential problems and put forward suggestions for further improvement.
