A Comparative Study of the Three English Versions Of Yu Xiang from the Perspective of Three-Beauty Principle

  1. Introduction

Yu Xiang was written by Dai Wangshu in 1927. At that time, the whole nation was turbulent. Dai Wangshu, as a progressive, had to take refuge in a friend’s home. In this situation, he wrote this poem and expressed a complicated feeling mixed with despair and hope. As time goes by, Yu Xiang has become one of the great classics of modern Chinese poems. Different translations have appeared, such as Ding Zuxin’s Rainy Alley, Tang Zhengqiu’s A Lane in the Rain, Gregory B. Lee’s Rainy Alley, and Lovehurts’s The Rainy Lane. The three English versions by Ding Zuxin, Tang Zhengqiu and Gregory B. Lee have been studied from the perspective of translation style (叶amp;肖, 2016). The English versions by Gregory B. Lee and Lovehurts have been selected for comparative study in light of Three-Beauty Principle (田, 2008).

Poetry is the most difficult part to compose in literature. Classic Chinese poems are the literature form with rich Chinese characteristics. Good poetry is the product of inspiration and talents. However, the form of poems brings some difficulties in translation. There is still a heated debate about the standards for poem translation. Andre Lefevere who proposed manipulation theory believed that translation is rewriting (Lefevere, 1992) and Zohar put forward polysyetem theory and introduced the concept “system” into translation literature (Zohar, 1978). The American poet Frost said that poetry is what gets lost in translation. Faced with so many different opinions, Xu Yuanchong, the famous poem translator, put forward the Three-Beauty Principle as a criterion for poetry translation, which is a crucial breakthrough in C-E poetry translation (Xu, 1978).

This paper attempts to compare the three English versions by Ding Zuxin, Tang Zhengqiu and Gregory B. Lee from the perspective of Three-Beauty principle and tries to draw a conclusion.
