跨文化传播视域下呼语翻译对比研究——以两版英译《红楼梦》为例 Comparative Study on the Terms of Address from the Intercultural Communication Perspective —- A Case Study on Two English Versions of A Dream of Red Mansions毕业论文

摘 要

中文古典小说的英译在促进中国文化的对外输出中占有相当重要的地位。然而由于中西语言及文化的巨大差异,在翻译中文古典小说中的称呼语时, 译者很难找到与之相匹配的表达方法。本文以跨文化传播的概念及其与文学 翻译间的相互作用为理论基础,从译者文化身份、翻译目的与翻译策略三种 视角出发,对比分析了两版英译本《红楼梦》中亲属称呼语以及社会称呼语 的翻译。笔者针对主要采用归化策略的霍克斯版英译本《红楼梦》与主要采 用异化策略的杨宪益版英译本《红楼梦》中亲属称呼语以及社会称呼语的翻 译进行了实证对比分析,结果表明,在中文古典小说称呼语的翻译中,异化 策略比归化策略更加有利于向西方社会传播中华传统文化。

The translation of Chinese classic novels plays an important role in Chinese culture exporting. However, due to the difference between China and western world in language and culture, translators can hardly decide which expression matches the original texts best when translating the terms of address in Chinese classic novels. Based on the theories of intercultural communication and its interaction with literary translation, this paper compares and analyzes the translations of relative terms of address and social terms of address in the two English versions of Hong Lou Meng, from the perspectives of cultural identities, translation purposes, and translation strategies. After the empirical comparative analysis directing at the translation of relative and social terms of address in Hawks’ version The Story of the Stone that mainly adopts domestication strategy and Yang’s version A Dream of Red Mansions that mainly adopts foreignization strategy, this paper draws the conclusion that in conveying Chinese traditional culture to western world, it’s better to use foreignization strategy instead of domestication strategy in translating the terms of address.
