Abstract
With the globalization deepening, the world is becoming a home, where all members are closely related to each other. As a result, translation is attracting worldwide attention. However, there is a common phenomenon existing among Chinese translation learners. That is many of them are not able to translate in a native way. On this account, a research on translation is done to find out the reason based on Chinese Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI). This study is conducted by reading many translation works of CATTI participants. With a comparison to the official versions, it finds that most participants fail to use idiomatic English in Chinese to English (C-E) translation, and cannot follow idiomatic Chinese rules in English to Chinese (E-C) translation. After a careful analysis, this research discovers that Chinese people share different thought patterns with English people (the U.S amp; the U.K). The difference is demonstrated specifically in three respects, grammar, syntax and culture. Thus, a contrast study on the three elements is done to support the point above. Based on the study, this research comes up with some corresponding strategies to mend the thought pattern gap, respectively establishing subjects, omission, the selection of word’s meaning, transition between slow-start and fast-start, and conversion. Besides, methods to avoid Chinglish will also be introduced. Hopefully, this paper will deliver some insights to readers and be of help to improve translation quality.
