摘 要

本论文所选用的材料来自William L. Shirere的The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich和董乐山等人翻译的汉译本《第三帝国的兴亡》。该书是一部纪实文学作品，讲述了纳粹德国在12年零4个月中从兴起到覆灭的全部过程。笔者在阅读过程中发现其中的长难句相对来说比较复杂，而其汉译本译文严谨流畅，简练而又有文采。因此本文选取其中的内容作为展示翻译方法的材料。

刘宓庆提出的包孕、切断、拆离、倒置、插入和重组的六种翻译方法，相比于其他学者提出的方法更具有代表性和综合性。本文将挑出《第三帝国的兴亡》中的部分例句，对六种方法逐一分析，每种方法又有不同的情况需要采取不同的处理方式。通过结合翻译实例，对这六种翻译方法的分析，从而对英语长难句的汉译提供参考和借鉴。

English-Chinese Translation of Long and Complex Sentences: A Case Study of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

1. Introduction

1.1 Research background

Long and complex English sentences, usually consisted of many modifiers, subordinate clauses and parallel structures, which are more complicated than other sentences. It often hinders the reader#39;s understanding of the original text. Therefore, it is a great challenge for translators to translate long and complex English sentences into Chinese. If these sentences cannot be properly translated, readers will not be able to appreciate the beauty of the translation. So we need to use some translation methods to help us translate English long and complex sentences.

Liu Miqing is a scholar and translation theorist who has made outstanding contributions to Chinese translation field. His translation method is highly systematic and comprehensive. The Chinese translation of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is accurate and fluent, with various translation techniques. He proposed six methods of translating long and complex long sentences: Embedding, Splitting, Inserting Reversing, Cutting and Recasting. This thesis will use the translation methods proposed by Liu Miqing to analyze the long and complex sentences from The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. The purpose is to demonstrate the six translation methods of long and complex English sentences systematically.
