The “Iceberg Theory” Reflected in Ernest Hemingway’s Soldier’s Home

1. Introduction

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) is an American writer and journalist who is spoken highly of as one of the most famous novelists in the 20th century. “He was one of the greatest naturalist writers. He dared to break through the tradition, create the new style and technique to meet the need of new theme” (Thorp 78). He is known as a representative of “the Lost Generation” in American history. In many of his works, he shows confusion and perplexity for life, the world and the society. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 for The Old Man and the Sea. Hemingway produced various well-known works during his life, among which The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940)and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1932) are best known to us.

Soldier’s Home is a novel set against the backdrop of the war. It tells of a story about the soldier Krebs who comes back to hometown very late after the war. He finds that people are no longer interested in topics about the war and if he wants to catch people’s attention, he has to lie. Then he becomes tired of lies. He is at a loss and finds it hard to adapt to the changes in his hometown. Desolated by people around him, he feels very lonely. Finally he decides to go out and get a job.

Hemingway’s “Iceberg Theory” has a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction. As Carlos Baker writes, “Iceberg Theory” is “how to get the most from the least, how to prune language and avoid wasting motion, how to multiply intensities, and how to tell nothing but the truth in a way that allowed for telling more than the truth” (Baker 27). Hemingway’s distinctive writing style is characterized by understatement. Hemingway has supreme ability to use the simplest words to describe the complicated things, use basic words and short brief sentences to express specific meanings and use nouns and verbs to uncover the nature of things.

The critics overseas often focus on the Unyielding Hero in Hemingway’s works by analyzing the heroic images and their determination. They also research on the narrative techniques of Hemingway, among which “Iceberg Theory” is an element that is often studied.
