An Analysis of the Feminist Consciousness in the Novel Their Eyes Were Watching God

  1. Introduction
    1. A brief introduction to the author and the novel

Zora Neale Hurston was an African-American novelist, born in Notaulga, short story writer, folklorist, and anthropologist. She is considered one of the pre-eminent writers of 20th century African-American literature. Her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God is one of Hurston’s best-known works. During her lifetime, she has written four novels and more than 50 published short stories, plays, and essays. In 1925, when Hurston arrived in New York City, the Harlem Renaissance reached its peak at that time and Hurston became one of the writers at its center soon. In 1926, together with many young black people produced a literary magazine called Fire. Hurston’s works have been unknown for decades, for a number of natural and political reasons and many readers objected to the expression of African-American dialect in Hurston’s novels. She was portrayed as a libertarian and her writings show empathy for feminist individualism.

Their Eyes Were Watching God is a 1937 novel and the best-known work by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie Crawford’s story, whose quest for identity takes her on a journey which she experiences life's meanings, learns what love is and come back home in peace. Her passionate story stimulated Alice Walker to say, "There is no book more important to me than this one."

When first published in 1937, this novel was about a proud and independent black woman who was generally disdained by male reviewers. Out of print for almost thirty years, but since its reissue in paperback edition by the University of Illionois Press in 1978, Their Eyes Were Watching God has become the most widely read and highly acclaimed novel in the canon of African-American literature.
