Abstract
Long Day’s Journey Into Night gives a detailed description of a series of events that take place in the Tyrone family in a day, reflecting the love-hate, complaint and understanding and blame and forgiveness among members of this middle class family. Eugene O'Neill highlights the spiritual loss of modern Americans in many of his works, while images are widely used in these plays. Image refers to the breadth of aesthetics. Image research has always been a very important research method. Images play an important role in showing a work’s main theme and help readers understand the work better. The images in Long Day’s Journey Into Night give the play which is full of realism a mystical color. Ocean, the land, fog, foghorn ,chair, morphine, wine and other images occupy an important position in the work. In fact, the overall image in the work is the spiritual implication and inner core. This paper aims to understand what juxtaposition of images and images in oppositions are, analyze the similarity and difference of juxtaposition of images and images in opposition, and further explore why Eugene O'Neill choose those images, that is, the implied meaning of images which appear in the work.

The Research on Images of Long Day's Journey Into Night
1.Introduction
Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953), an American playwright, was born in New York. He was a representative writer of expressionist literature and the founder of American national drama. His main works include Emperor Jones, The Hairy Ape, Beyond the Horizon, etc. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936. Long Day’s Journey Into Night is Eugene O'Neill's last work, which is considered as his best work. His main concern is the distortion of humanity and the process of personality under external pressure, showing modern psychoanalysis (especially Freudianism) and the tragic consciousness of ancient Greece.
Researchers home and abroad have paid great attention to his works. In the book American Realism and Naturalism, Professor Donald Pizer, a well-known American scholar, has collected 11 commentary articles with novel perspectives, aiming at introducing and studying the realism and naturalism of American drama comprehensively. This book had instructive meaning for studying the naturalistic characteristics of Eugene O'Neill's modern tragedy. Travis Bogard's book Contour in Time: The Plays of Eugene O'Neill, published in 1972, expounded the literary, artistry and historical influence of Eugene O'Neill's works, which had a great guiding role in the study of O'Neill's tragic characteristics. Virginia Freud described Eugene O'Neill's pioneering efforts for American theatre in his play Eugene O'Neill: A New Evaluation.
