The Analysis of Transnational Marriage from Intercultural Perspective

1. Introduction

With our accession to the EU and the growth in immigration, there are greater numbers of transnational marriages. However, because of culture gap, some transnational couples are more likely to meet some problems in marriage than the normal couple from the same nation. High divorce rate, family violence and other social problems are all potential threats to transnational marriage. Generally speaking, the probability of failure for intercultural marriage may be increased because of a lack of common social networks (Parkamp;Adelman, 1983). Therefore, it is high time to discuss those conflicts and problems in order to give rational and wise advices to those intercultural couples who are in urgent need of help.

1.1 Definition of intercultural marriage

Transnational marriage, is a kind of marriage between two people from different countries. According to Carley Dodd (1997), one of the famous professors of Intercultural Communication. In his book Dynamics of Intercultural Communication, he defines intercultural marriage like this:

Intercultural marriage, sometimes called dual cultural marriage comes in various forms, including rural urban inter-ethnic,interracial,national and global macro cultures, transnational social classes, transnational religions, and transnational regions of the United States. Where there are significant group differences that mark the marriage,we choose to call it intercultural marriage, and refer to the partners as intercultural couples.

In a word, transnational marriage is a marriage beyond marital relations between national boundaries and people in different countries, due to the different cultural environments, values, cultural psychology, aesthetics and religious customs, which brings difficulties to transnational marriage.

1.2 Reasons for the increasing intercultural marriage

Great changes have taken place in China since the opening to outside world. In the process of globalization, cross-cultural exchange becomes more and more frequent. As a result, the number of transnational marriage registration in China is increasing year by year, and has been involved in many countries and regions. The concerned reasons are mainly as follows: economic factors, cultural influence and ideological behavior.

1.2.1 Economic factors

No matter in the past or the present, the factor of economy, is regarded as the essential reason for transnational marriage. Just because ancient China was in an underdeveloped productivity, so this factor has not attached enough importance. However, with the development of productivity, great changes have taken place in China since the opening to outside world. Globalization has boosted the growth of trade in the world, more people have the opportunity to work in a transnational corporation. Trade matters more in today’s integrated world than ever before. Working in a foreign country, you’ll have a better chance of dealing with foreigners. In addition, driven by concerns for material benefits, together with people’s desire for superior living conditions abroad, more and more people choose to live and work in a foreign country.

1.2.2 Cultural influence

The cultural factors also made a great contribution to the development of transnational marriage. According to the relevant materials, as early in Tang Dynasty, in order to set up cultural exchanges, princess Wencheng and princess Jincheng married to Tubo one after the other, pioneering the inter marriage between Han and Tibetan people. For now, in In the process of globalization, with the frequent cultural exchange among countries, different cultures intend to be merged. The western culture achieved a good intercultural communication in the world. A large of the western books and films were introduced to China. As a result of the attraction by exotic cultural, transnational marriage has gradually sprung up in today’s world.
