An Analysis of the Unique Female Images in the Movie The Devil Wears Prada

  1. Introduction

The Devil Wears Prada came out in 2003. Then, the book was made into a movie in 2006, and later this movie has been widely concerned by people. The movie describes three different women in the same company. With different statuses and jobs, they have to fulfill their respective obligations. We can thus learn different experiences from their careers. New York Post once commented that the actress Streep did not choose to imitate Anna Wintour, who is the editor of the fashion magazine as well as the prototype character in the novel. Streep creates her own convincing personality.

(Yang amp; Zhu 2015)What’s more, The New York Times reported that Streep’s silver

hair, pale skin and the way of whispering are in accordance with her postures. Meanwhile, Miranda who is shaped by Streep in this movie, has enough grounds to make us daunting.(Sun 2010) This type of movie is suitable for every new office lady to see. It reflects the famous topics of office ladies’ concern. For example, the first job, workplace struggle, career and family, personal image enhancement, and even losing weight can find corresponding plot in the movie. Every young man or woman is able to find his or her own experience in the movie. On the other hand, the movie provides a considerable reference in a competitive environment. What’s more, the humorous tone, positive attitude towards life and the fine quality of the movie has made it stand out among the same type.

This paper is divided into three parts. The first part is a brief introduction about the movie, including some evaluation both at home and abroad and some problems reflected by the movie. The second part analyzes the three unique images and put

forward some suggestions for both the newly-graduated and office women. The third part is a brief conclusion about this movie.

  1. Demonstration
    1. An overview of the movie

The movie The Devil Wears Prada is adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name. In the novel, the original author Lauren Weisberger largely tells the story related with her own experience.

In the movie, Andy is a graduated student, who wants to be a journalist and works as an assistant in a fashion company. Firstly, she doesn’t want to change at all. However, in this fierce environment, she feels confused and makes her own choice. But soon she found that it is not a job fit for her. In the end, she gives up the job. Miranda is a fashionable and dazzling queen authoritarian. Her requests are always unreasonable. All the people fear her. She betrays her partner in order to keep her job. Emily is a chief assistant of Miranda. During the working time, she always looks down on Andy. She is yearning for Paris. So, when she knows the result that she can’t go, she was deeply buried in self-abandonment.

      1. Reflected problems

Movies can be a reflection of society. From this movie we can see the present society is still a male-dominant one. Although the American society is not so conservative as that of the Europe, the cultural discrimination against women still exists. In the movie, there exists the potential of social discrimination against women in work. On the surface, women can hold the leaders’ posts in large companies, with men serving them. But Miranda's company is a fashion magazine company, which just coincides with the male thinking that women can only engage in jobs like fashion. From the viewpoint of men, it is very understandable for a woman to be the leader of a

fashion magazine. This somewhat reflects the gender division of labor that women can only engage in women’s occupations, such as fashion, education, while men mainly engage in more rational work such as government, information industry and other more rational work. When a woman is focused on her career, she will be criticized for failing to care for her family, but a man who is busy with his career is praised as family-centered behavior. In addition, with the development of technology, the rapid development of society poses more stringent requirements for women, who in the new era are required to balance the relationship between business success and family well-being. Powerful as Miranda is, she still has to face the breakdown of her marriage. From the breakup of her marriage and her silent tears, we can see not only a woman's lament, but the women's lament of the entire society. The success of a woman in her career is usually at the expense of her own marriage. Similarly, when Andy is in the pursuit of a successful career, she gets very confused because she gradually loses the support of friends and beloved ones. As it is, her confusion to some extent represents the confusion of the whole women community. Therefore, how to find the best balance between career success and family happiness is also one of the biggest problems that plague the contemporary women.

    1. Approaches to the analysis of the movie

Gramsci’s cultural hegemony theory states that in the western capitalist societies advanced with a higher degree of democracy, it is no longer a way of ruling through violence, but through propaganda and leadership with its morality and spirituality to achieve its purpose of domination, so that the majority of the people are willing to accept their series of legal system or world view. In the field of female subject matters, the patrilineal society of men should rule through the controlling of media, education and other cultural means to promote their ideology, so that women willing to compromise. The theory of feminism involves the conflicted dual role of women in family and
