A Study on Culture Shock in The Guasha Treatment
1.Introduction
The term culture shock was first proposed and defined by the American anthropologist Oberg : culture shock causes by the sudden loss of familiar social interaction symbols and the unfamiliarity of each other’s social interaction symbols, resulting in an unexpected anxiety and depth anxiety disorder, like a sudden departure from the cultural husk of their own growth. People often have a very uncomfortable feeling(Oberg 1960).
Sapir once said culture shock refers to a person who has migrated to a new cultural environment from their inherent cultural environment cannot adapt himself to the present culture(Sapir 1921). After World War Ⅱ, as the population flowed in large numbers, a large number of immigrants were born. They moved from country to country, moving from a cultural background to a new cultural background. What they are going to face is the social psychological problems of many cultures. The word “culture shock” also rose at that time. For these reasons, there are physical factors, but more are psychological factors. In a new cultural environment, culture shock can make the passive person at loose ends, even the whole person’s psychological balance and value judgment standard will be completely lost.
There are four main stages of culture shock. At the beginning of a new environment, everything is fresh and full of novelty. This is your honeymoon phase with the new environment. During the first period of honeymoon, a person’s mood is usually more pleasant, the learning motivation is very strong, the language progresses very quickly, also likes to associate with the foreigner and hope to build up new relationships soon. With a deeper understanding of the new environment, the honeymoon period will be broken by a lot of triviality in life, thus entering the second stage, that is hostility stage. During this period, individuals will have strong psychological confusion and physical discomfort. Thus, they will tired of many things in the culture of the new environment. At this very moment, you will come up with defensive ways to protect yourself from the impact of culture shock. For example: repression, regression, isolation and rejection. After overcoming one’s antagonism, he entered the recovery phase. In this phase, he started to get positive and try to understand what you don’t understand. You gradually begin to adapt yourself to new norms, new values and integrate yourself into local society. The last stage of culture shock is called adjustment. At this stage, you have adapted to the new culture. But adaptation did not mean complete transformation, and people tend to retain the characteristics of many original cultures.
Recent years, a lot of scholars carry on systematic research to culture shock. In the article, The Chinese and Western cultural differences behind The Guasha Treatment , the author describes the differences between Chinese medicine and western medicine. The author focus on the analysis of philosophical view that the word is material is the reason that western medicine generated. However, Chinese medicine’s philosophical view is intermediary. This thesis links culture shock to philosophy theory to reflect the cultural unconscious that many people have(郑敏2012). The article refers to philosophical theory, so maybe we will feel it abstract relatively.
