The Great Hypnotist—the Transformation of the Humbert’s Identities in Lolita
- Introduction
Born in St Petersburg, Vladimir Nabokov is an outstanding novelist and stylist in the twentieth Century. However, what makes him become a famous proser is that he writes works in English. Written in America, Lolita is the most famous and controversial one in Nabokov’s works. In Lolita, the road to redemption is not due to shame, but wisdom produced by inner reflection. Famous for the use of writing skills and originality art, Lolita uses the shell of erotic novels to depict input, conflicts and failures between people and world. Faced with desire, its tragedy results from stupid measures. It is a book of mercy rather than a book of criticism.
Foreign researchers gradually tend to comparative study, details and narrative strategies. In “ Faust in Lolita: Composing sins, and rhetorical, redemption Mackey and Aurora”, Mackey and Aurora compare Faust with Humbert, revealing many common characteristics of the two works. In “ How unreliable is Humbert in Lolita”, Moore, Anthony R. mainly discusses Humbert’s maturation during his narration and has a precise understanding of the author’s artistry. In contrast, domestic researchers focus on criticizing morality and analyzing characters’ images by means of different theories. In “ ‘Enchanted Hunters’ — the Humbert’s pursuit of spirit in Lolita” , Nie Diandian uses Freud’s children sex theory and Stanzel's narrative theory to analyze Humbert’s self-identity and abnormal love.
Concerned with the trend of studying the figure, domestic and international scholars will be inclined to use various theories to interpret his abnormal love. However, this study is rather general and incomplete. This paper will focus on the study of Humbert’s identities. As Kath Woodward announces, “ While psychoanalytic theories play a significant part in the investigation of identity at many different points in the story, Freud’s conceptualization of the unconscious provides an important starting point” (Woodward 16). Therefore, this paper will take advantage of Freud’s subconscious theory to analyze Humbert’s identities, features and reasons of formation.
