The Fusion of Science and Literature in John Donne’s Poetry

1. Introduction

John Donne (1572-1631) is the forerunner of the English metaphysical poetry in the 17th century. “Metaphysical poets” is a term coined by the poet and critic Samuel Johnson to describe a loose group of English lyric poets of the 17th century, whose works were characterized by the inventive use of conceits, and by speculation about topics such as love or religion.1 Liu Bingshan points out, "Donne is a poet of peculiar conceits, having his own way of reasoning and comparison."(Liu 117) Donne lived in the 17th century when new scientific discoveries had challenged the traditional science. Donne was educated and influenced by old science while appreciating the new science, so in his poetry, we can see the scientific images of both new science and old science. All these images are the carriers of his own emotions and an important part of his unique art as well.

John Donne is famous for his love poems, religious poems and elegies. Most of his poems are using fancy and ridiculous images which are difficult to understand and don't follow the conventional trend and he was considered by that time to be the one who should be hanged for not following the rhythm (Haskin 9), so not until the end of the 20th century, when the current poets were in a great struggle to get rid of the romantic poetry of the 20th century, did people pay much attention to John Donne's poetry. In 1912, The Poems of John Donne compiled by Grierson collected and organized John Donne's works for the first time. His best-known works include: Holy Sonnets, Songs and Sonnets, the Elegies, A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning and so on.
