Personalities and Life Choices of the Four Sisters in Little Women

Introduction

Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, the second daught er of Amos Bronson and Abigail Abba May Alcott. She was raised in Concord, Massachusetts, a small town to the north of Boston that was home to many great writers of the day. Nevertheless, her family suffered severe financial difficulties and Alcott worked to help support the family from an early age.

Shebegan to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s. Early in her career, she sometimes used the pen name A. M. B arnard and under it wrote novels for young adults.

Little Women was written by Luisa May Alcott. The novel’s background was the Civil War. It’s a novel about an ordinary family of four sisters in the New England region in nineteenth century. The novel was influenced by the great ideologist Emerson and it emphasizes the individual dignity and independence. The contents are plain but abundant. It has a simple structure but strong infectivity. This novel describes ordinary daily lives of the family. It shows readers family love from the whole family. According to four sisters, no matter who it is, although they are different in dream or life, they all have the characteristic of self-reliance in common.

Foreign researches on Little Women are mainly concentrated on the traditional American culture, the spirit of Transcendentalism and Puritanism. Feminism is surely a direction for foreign scholars. Some people even called it as the female version of The Pilgrim’s Progress. The female consciousness is gender consciousness and it is the understanding for female’s social status. Chinese Scholars also show great interest in Little Women. Most of the researches concentrate on the education, female consciousness, transcendentalism and etc.
