Emily Jane Brontë (30 July 1818 – 19 December 1848) was an English novelist and she is considered to be a classic of English literature. Although she published only one novel─Wuthering Heights in her whole life. The novel is regarded as a piece of grand work in world literature. Emily had two sisters Charlotte and Anne. In 1820, after her youngest sisiter Anne’s birth, her family moved to Haworth. Here the children developed their literary talents. She wrote under the pen name Ellis Bell.

Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights was first published in London in 1847. The novel has been experienced a lot of ups and downs─from being criticized and ignored to being regarded as one of the best novels in the world. When the novel was just published, Victorian readers thought the story full of various morbid psychologies. They thought the book should be renamed as Wuthering Heights. The book was criticized and abandoned at that time. With the passage of time, more and more people are interested in the novel. Lots of scholars have begun to analyze the novel from different perspectives, such as love and revenge, feminist consciousness.

Wuthering Heights has received wide critical attention and been studied from different perspectives. The overseas study of this story can be divided into the following aspects: love and revenge, the personalities of main characters and feminist consciousness. Chinese scholars have explored the structure, Gothic style as well as characterization. For example, in Xiao Minghan’s Gothic Tradition in English and American Literature, written in 2001, in Pu Ruoxi’s Wuthering Heights and Gothic Tradition, written in 2002, they all analyzed Wuthering Heights in the aspect of Gothic style.
