Deficiencies in International Popularization of Classical Chinese Garden

Culture and Improvement Measures

Introduction

International popularization is defined as "a nation or cultural system operating information exchange activities with another nation or cultural system, with the goal of fostering a friendly attitude and aspirations for cooperation, creating an international opinion environment that is conducive to exporting countries, and finally achieve the biggest international support and cooperation."(Zhang, 1999)

The Chinese cultural strategy of “going global” not only meets the need of promoting national image, but also the reality needs of expanding cultural influence under the background of economic globalization. It is also of great significance in promoting the opening up policy as well as economic and social development. President Xi has pointed out in reports of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China that we need to “promote international popularization, tell the Chinese story, show the world a real, three-dimensional and comprehensive China and improve the national cultural soft strength.” Chinese classical gardens, with their emphasis on “the sensual appreciation of nature at each site as a means of grasping culturally codified moral principles”(Thomas, 2009), the spread of which is an important way to enhance the global influence of Chinese culture as well as a significant component of the Chinese culture “going global” strategy. Under the background of globalization, the collision between Chinese and Western culture has triggered new trends of thought. The popularity of the Internet and the rise of new media have provided unprecedented opportunities for Chinese gardens to “go global”. The best way for Chinese gardens to jump out of traditional pattern and spread in a diversified way is expected to be found out.

      1. Mass media

Mass media is a mode of transmission based on books, newspapers, radio, television and the Internet. With unparalleled advantage in the speed and coverage of information dissemination, it is therefore regarded as the most important way for cultural communication.

        1. Journals and periodicals--popularization of Chinese gardens in an all-round way

Academic journals, which can be widely distributed regularly, is highly effective and professional in disseminating academic information and sharing academic research results. They have now become an effective tool for professional researchers and fans to learn about garden culture. One of the popular academic journals on Chinese gardens is Chinese Garden, sponsored by the Chinese Landscape Architecture Association. The content mainly consist of the introduction of garden aesthetics at home and abroad, garden planning, plant landscaping and so on. Journal of The Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture edited by the museum contains nine columns, such as “Celebrity Interviews”, “Theories and Research” and “History of Famous Gardens”. The perfect combination of history and modern times, theories and practice unfolds the beauty of Chinese gardens to the public. In addition, there are other journals such as Garden hosted by Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture and Shanghai Academy of Landscape Architecture Science and Planning, “Landscape Garden” hosted by Beijing Forestry University.

        1. Professional publications--dissemination of professional garden culture

Yuanye(or The Craft of Gardens), written by Ji Cheng, a famous architect in Ming Dynasty, is the first theoretical monograph in China to raise the art of landscape

and gardening to a theoretical level. An English version translated by Alison Hardie was published in 1988. In 1997, a French version translated by French-Chinese architect Chiu Chebing was published and won the favor of overseas readers. Chinese Garden compiled by Fang Huawen, Wang Manliang, He Ying was published in 2010. More than 100 gardens were introduced in both Chinese and English in three chapters, namely Royal gardens, Temple gardens and Private gardens. Readers may feel as strolling in a beautiful Chinese garden while reading the book. Other important monographs include Record of Jiangnan Gardens written by Tong Jun, Suzhou Gardens written by Chen Congzhou and History of Classical Chinese Gardens by Zhou Weiquan, all of which vividly unfold the brilliance of Chinese garden culture.
