An Analysis of Family Ethics as Seen in

Downton Abbey and Big House

  1. Introduction

Downton Abbey is a classical drama produced by British ITV. The play tells about the entanglements and frictions caused by the inheritance of family property in the Earl of Grantham of Downton Abbey during the George V era from 1912 to 1920. It presents the humanity of the upper echelons in the UK. Big House is a family drama directed by the famous Chinese director Guo Baochang. The story took place during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty. The drama showed us the history of the rise and fall of the "Herbs Office" drugstore and the grievances between the three generations of the medical family Bai, reflecting the family ethics in Chinese society.
Downton Abbey and Big House respectively describe the rise and fall of the big family of the Chinese and Western society in the 19th century and the grievances and hatreds of the characters, and they all vividly and meticulously portray the life of the Chinese and Western feudal family. The big family of the upper class is the place where the traditional family ethics is the most concentrated. These two works have great similarities in the background of time, basically in the same period. Therefore, a comparative analysis of the differences between Chinese and Western traditional culture embodied in Downton Abbey and Big House, especially the similarities and differences in family ethics, has certain significance.

This article first gives a brief overview of the background and main content of the two works Downton Abbey and Big House and introduces the family ethics of the Chinese and Western families. Then, it is specifically carried out from the content of the differences in family ethics between China and the West and the corresponding reasons. Firstly, through the analysis of Downton Abbey, it is analyzed that the family ethics in the West is mainly a family ethics system built on the individual-centered

concept, its axis based on the relation between husband and wife, and the patriarchal ethics, thus forming a unique family value. Then through the analysis of the characters and family structure of the Bai family in Big House, this thesis attempts to show that the family ethics system of the Chinese is composed of the family-oriented concept, its axis based on the relation between father and son and the contractual ethics. Through the comparative study of Chinese and Western family ethics, the thesis explores the husband-and-wife relationship and parent-child relationship, thereby promoting their respective cultural advantages. The thesis ends with the conclusion that we should pay attention to the individual standard and respect the development of personality on the basis of emphasizing the family standard by building a harmonious and friendly family atmosphere of respect, understanding and equality so as to dissolve the indifference in interpersonal relationships, providing a good environment for the growth of children.
