Research on the stereotype of Crazy Rich Asians

  1. Introduction

The author of Crazy Rich Asians is Kevin Kwan. When Kwan’s family moved to Texas, he was eleven, he grew up in Singapore. Crazy Rich Asians is Kwan’s first novel. This book is famous for it’s nutty characters and their delightfully wicked excesses. It becomes a breakout best seller and a popular ‘beach read’. The appearance of this novel has made the richest people in Asia, especially the rich in China, attract the attention of the whole world. At the same time, the movie of the same name adapted from this novel last year also caused a frenzy in the United States.

Crazy Rich Asians tells the story of wealthy Asians. In novel, only a small number of people are ordinary people, and most of them are rich.

The history of Chinese immigration to the United States is also very long. However, the problem of racial discrimination against Chinese in American society has always existed, which is due to the stereotype of Chinese in the hearts of Americans. Most of the early Chinese immigrants in American history were uneducated workers, because language barriers were often given a "silent" stereotype. They made great contributions to the construction of railway projects across the United States. After the railway completion, the employment problem was squeezed out. After the promulgation of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, American public opinion tools began to smear and defile Chinese.

The formation of stereotypes is mainly due to the fact. In social life, no one has the time and energy to have an in-depth understanding of each member of each group, but only with some of them. Therefore, it is only possible to infer all of them, and use the parts that are in contact to infer all of this group. However, once stereotyped, it is difficult to break. At the same time, it will have a great impact on people's cognitive process.
