摘 要

几十年来，随着国家实力的不断提升，世界上的其他国家，特别是美国这样强国，越来越多地将目光投向中国。中国在政治和经济领域所提出的重大政策也关系到其他国家，不同国家对中国所提出政策的态度也不同。新闻是一种向公众提供新近发生的事实的报道。西方主流媒体，特别是美国的主流媒体，由于其背后强大国家实力支撑，具有很强的传播能力，公众对事情的理解和态度也受到这些主流媒体的影响。本文将以CNN对于"一带一路"的报道为例，从文体学角度研究美国主流媒体如何报道中国政策。本文共分为五个部分。第一部分介绍了论文的背景，主要包括其内容、目的和意义。第二部分对文献进行综合的解释。第三部分介绍该研究的理论框架，对重要的理论进行阐释。第四部分是选取CNN关于一带一路的报道，从语相、词汇、语法、语篇和语义层面进行了具体的文体分析。最后一部分通过上述分析得出结论，美国媒体对中国政策的报道受到国际形势和国家利益的影响。

Abstract

With the improvement of national power for decades, other countries, especially these powerful countries like America, have increasingly set their sights on China. The significant policy which is put forward by China in political and economic area have aroused great concerns from other countries. Different countries have different attitudes to China’s policy. News report is a style which provides current information to the public. The western mainstream media, especially America’s media, has a strong dissemination ability. Hence the understanding and attitudes on the part of public are under the influence of mainstream media. This thesis takes CNN’s reports about “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) as a case to study how American media reports Chinese policy from the perspectives of stylistics. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first chapter is an introduction about the thesis including research background, objectives and significance. A review of literature is provided in the second chapter. The third chapter is a theoretical framework of study and it gives essential explanation for theory. The fourth chapter is a stylistic analysis of CNN’s reports from graphological, lexical, grammatical, textual and semantic levels. The last chapter presents the conclusion that the American media’s coverages of Chinese policy are influenced by international situation and national interests according to the analysis.

A Stylistic Analysis of the News Reports on Chinese Policy in American Mainstream Media

—— A Case Study of CNN’s Reports about “One Belt, One Road”

1 Introduction

Since the start of the reform and opening-up policy, the economy of China has continued to develop and comprehensive national power has risen incessantly. And now, China has become a great power in GDP after the United States. After President Nixon’s visit to China in 1970s, the relation between America and China gradually transformed from rivalry to communication. For decades, many significant policies that have enabled China to make political, economic and diplomatic achievements have been put forward by the Chinese government. Nevertheless, for reasons of national interest, the United States does not have much support for these policies, and some scholars even believe that there is a "China threat theory" in Western countries.

News report refers to a general variety of language, which sends out hot news, news of important events and interesting events to all parts of the country or region by mass media (Zhangamp; Zhangamp; Zhangamp; Hu, 2016:53). It is a main information source for majorities due to people’s limitation of activity range in society. Hence, looking at mainstream US media’s coverage of Chinese policy provides a glimpse into the American media's attitude to these policies and the impact that the media's views will impact on readers' minds. One Belt One Road(OBOR) initiative, which was launched in 2013, gives help to China and other countries for actively cooperating in pursuit of win-win results, and puts forward a series of economic policies and strategies to make the economic ties between the related countries more closely linked to China, make political mutual trust more in-depth, and make human communication more extensive and deeper. This initiative has brought great benefits to China and the countries concerned, both in the economic and political areas.
