An Analysis on Pip’s Characters in Great Expectations

  1. Introduction

Charles Dickens is a famous writer in 19th century. He has many masterpieces which are loved and read by the public so far. These works include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and so on. From many of works, we can see that Dickens is especially good at portraying the life encounters of the little people in bottom of society, and thus profoundly reflects the social reality in England at that time. Not only is his writing brilliant, so is his life experience. He worked as an apprentice, perhaps because of this experience, which made his works more concerned with the working-class people’s life. He also worked at a law firm and also was a reporter who interviewed the British House of Commons policy and took part in the interview election activities. In 1849, his autobiographical novel called David Copperfield was available. The content of this book was associated with his private experiences. In June 1870, Dickens passed away. His works have spread around the world, and he has become a famous writer in English literary.

From December 1860 to August 1861, Great Expectations was serialized in the weekly magazine called the four seasons. This novel tells us a story that a common countryside boy became to London after he got a huge inheritance of property. He thought he had become a gentleman, and no one would ever look down upon him again. And he would be with his favorite girl, Estella. But the future did not go as far as he thought. The man who funded him was not Miss Havisham but the prisoner he had helped in his childhood, and Estella would marry someone else. In the process, Pip's characters are no longer single, but changing. From the young sensitive inferiority to the later conceited and hypocritical, then when he lost everything and found himself again and returned to the good and virtuous Pip. The novel runs through Dickens' style. Dickens uses the spicy style, humorous language to reveal the evil society can corrode the protagonist's spiritual feelings. Through the ups and downs of the protagonist, he expresses his views on life and human nature. This book highlights the themes of love, loyalty and conscience that are more important than wealth and social status. This book has been adapted into a series of television dramas and plays for hundreds of years. Edgar Johnson highly praised the book as “having the most perfect structure and language in comparison to other works of Dickens”. In 1965, May Granata pointed out in "Pip's Great Expectations and Ours" that this was one of Dickens' best novels, because the moral issues it expressed were not as simple as we had seen. Pip is not a young philosopher. He is full of emotions about the moral principles of behaviorism. Moreover, Great Expectations ends naivety and disillusionment with reality. This paper analyze Pip’s characters to show that when we pursue our great expectations, only through effort by ourselves that can gain better future.
