He published his second novel On the Road in 1957. And then he published Dharma Bums (1958), Book of Dream (1960), The Subterranean (1958), Desolation Angels (1961) etc. On the Road was Jack’s representative works. This is an autobiographical novel.
Jack Kerouac was a spokesperson of the Beat Generation. His work On the Road was the most famous works of the Beat Generation. On the Road was about young people traveling everywhere and their desire for escaping from real society and looking for freedom. In the book, protagonists took four different trips. On the road, they were drinking, smoking marijuana, car-stealing, sleeping around, talking about the oriental Zen Buddhism. They abandoned their white identity and escaped from the mainstream society, trying to find their spiritual freedom. But finally, because of their ignorance of black culture and the exclusiveness of the white identity, they failed in achieving their goals.
