A Study of the Epiphany in Dubliners
1. Introduction
James Joyce (1882-1941), an Irish poet and novelist, is considered to be one of the greatest writers in English literature and a modernist master. His successful use of symbols and stream of consciousness breaks through the bondage of the realism and traditional writing skills. His presence marks the real blossom of the stream- of - consciousness novel.
Joyce is not a prolific writer, who only wrote three long novels, a collection of short stories, a play and poetry. And his reputation lies primarily in his novels, which includes Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Though Joyce lives abroad for long time, he still takes his motherland Ireland, especially Dublin, as the writing material and made it the most important situational context of his works. Among these works, Dubliners, which sets its background in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, can be seen as the most typical and comprehensive one to show the various Dublin lives and characters in the late 19th and early 20th century. Besides, about Dubliners, Joyce, himself, stresses that,
My intention was to write a chapter of the moral history of my country and I chose Dublin for the scene because the city seemed to me the center of paralysis. I have tried to present it to the indifferent public under four of its aspects: childhood, adolescence, maturity, and public life. (134)
